Abstract

The phenomenon of transsexualism, already widespread in the past, and the attraction towards those who make this choice seems to have increased in today's culture. Starting from Adler's concept of psychic hermaphroditism, the finalities of the transsexual choice are investigated, hypothesizing attempts to overcome conditions of organ and social inferiority. The theoretical premise of this investigation is that changes in sexual roles are not aimed at real sexual liberalization, but at perpetuating traditional dynamics based on the existence of opposing pairs of “man/superiority - woman/inferiority.” The masculine protest in women would induce a crisis of masculinity in men, and the consequent compensation of the female role, experienced as absent, would see its realization in what is defined as “feminine protest.” The Adlerian-oriented psychotherapeutic approach is based on strong emotional involvement aimed at understanding the goals associated with this choice
