Abstract

Feelings of inferiority and insecurity are the backbone of neurosis and force patients to overuse the mental tools they have: thoughts, willpower, and actions. This messes up their relationships and creates a barrier between them and others or makes them act aggressively toward their environment, which they end up enslaving. This desire for power, of which Ulysses and Faust are the ultimate expressions, takes the form of Adlerian virile protest. This theoretical framework is illustrated by the presentation of the case of an anxious and depressed 18-year-old with phobic-obsessive manifestations, hallucinatory-delusional episodes, and psychosomatic manifestations, and a 38-year-old with somatization and anxiety-depressive syndrome
